How To Be A Full Time Home Piano Tutor In Singapore – 3 Tips

Here are three tips to help you become a full time home piano teacher in Singapore.

Firstly, if you intend to become full time at some point in your career as a piano teacher in Singapore, you must take your ABRSM gradings up till at least grade 8 ABRSM. If you are below that, you will severely struggle to attract customers and students. This is because you cannot teach students as they reach your level or higher if you are below grade 8. Since many students in Singapore are looking to pass Grade 8 eventually, you will lose a lot of students there. Additionally, parents of students who learn the piano are usually middle class and above. This means that they rather pay a few dollars more a month for a piano teacher who is grade 8 or Diploma qualified than paying for your services. As a result of this, you must take up till grade 8 as a bare minimum for your ABRSM qualifications.

Secondly, giving great piano lessons are not just about being highly qualified academically. That just puts you through the door. Teaching is your main job – transferring your knowledge to your students. The more effective you do this and helping them master the piano, the more students you will be able to retain. Notice that this does not automatically get you more students yet. I will talk more about that in the next tip. Therefore, other than being minimally grade 8 qualified, you want to take courses on how to teach effectively. You want every advantage you can possibly imagine over other teachers in Singapore if you want to thrive as a full time music teacher in Singapore!

Thirdly, you cannot be a full time piano teacher without sufficient students. The above two are just good foundations to build your career on, but it will not be able to kickstart your career as a piano teacher. You will need customers/students. How do you do that? I strongly recommend that you start partnering with a local piano teacher agency such as Awesome Piano Lessons by Awesome Group, TheHappyPianist or SGLearnPiano. Start this as soon as you made up your mind to be a music teacher. Ideally, you want to do this while you are still schooling or working a job somewhere else. This is the ideal way to kickstart your career. This is because such an agency will be able to get you customers/students on top of your own efforts, basically doubling the rate at which you can become full time. Additionally, some students will always drop off over time – some because of personal reasons while others because they have reached grade 8 or even Diploma. You must be very mentally prepared for this. Therefore, by partnering with an agency on top of your own student searching efforts, you will be able to guarantee your rice bowl.
